Mataatua Marae, located on land donated by Ngāti Whakaue in the early 1900s for Tūhoe descendants, holds immense cultural significance for the Tūhoe people. Throughout the 1950s, the marae served as a vital meeting place for Tūhoe and Ngāti Whare members who had migrated from Te Urewera to work in Rotorua’s flourishing forestry sector. Following a comprehensive restoration of the mahau and wharekai, the marae has recently reopened its doors, ready to welcome and serve generations of Tūhoe with the traditional values of manaakitanga towards family, tribe, and the wider community.
Mataatua marae is strategically situated in a prime location for easy access to sports grounds, shops, tours, and activities, offering convenience to visitors. Despite its central position, the marae provides a unique and peaceful setting, serving as a tranquil sanctuary away from the bustling surroundings. The serene atmosphere fosters a warm and inviting environment, allowing individuals to immerse themselves in a sense of cultural richness. With its ideal blend of convenient proximity and tranquil ambiance, Mataatua marae stands out as a top choice for those seeking a harmonious balance between convenience when visiting Rotorua.
